Report
Report 1 - Chris Helm (Sidecarcross Press Services)
The third round of the 2005 Clubman’s Championship was held yesterday at the excellent Canada Heights track in Kent in near perfect weather conditions – the rain that was threatened never made it!
After three very hard fought races the overall win went to David Keane / Andy Heighes from Jon Rutherford and his stand in passenger Greg Wernham with Rob Topp / Rob Batten third.
In race one the charge into the first corner was led by Roger Blackman / Doug Woods from Topp / Batten and top 30 crew Paul Pelling / Craig Burt in third. By the end of lap one Topp was leading from Pelling with Jamie Stevens / Stuart Dance 3rd fending off John Lyne / Colin Dunkley who had pulled through from a second row start. Lyne very soon got through to second place but was unable to pass Topp by the flag. Of the Clubman runners Topp was the winner with Blackman taking second and Scott Balsillie / Steve Baughan third.
Race two was led for the first lap by Keane / Heighes but it wasn’t long before they were passed by Topp / Batten. Lyne worked his way up from fourth on lap one to second by lap three but once again although he closed right up on Topp he was unable to pass. Keane held third for the rest of the race. Pelling was in third at the beginning but his kill switch came out, dropping him down the field. At the flag the Clubman’s class was won by Topp from Keane and Rutherford third.
By the start of the final race the tough track conditions had taken their toll and the line up was noticeably reduced. This time Lyne made no mistake from the start and took the early lead from Pelling, Keane with Topp back in fourth. Pelling held onto Lyne for the first three laps but eventually Lyne was able to open up a gap. As the race reached it’s closing stages Topp got past Keane but his third place was short lived when, on the next lap, his chain broke.
After three rounds Rutherford still leads the championship just 6 points ahead of Topp with Blackman third.
The next round is at Stebbing at the Dunmow club’s old fashioned ‘scrambles’ track on May 1st
