Canada Heights preview!

The Maxxis British Motocross Championship visits Canada Heights in Kent on the Sunday 9th April 2006 and Series Manager, Brian Higgins is pleased to report on the condition of the track following his inspection last Wednesday, 29th March.

Brian said, “Dave Edwards and his team have worked very hard and the circuit is in the best shape I have seen for a number of years. If we have similar luck with the weather as the Norwich Vikings MCC had with the first round at Lyng, the riders and Teams will be very pleased with the effort given.”

In addition to this the Sidcup DMCC have lined up a very special treat for the spectators, with several demonstration laps by Team Desert Rose, Patsy Quick and Clive Town with crew chief Clive Dredge, plus fellow ‘Rally Raid‘ contestants Mick Extance and Nick Plumb with their awesome off-road machines. Which will be both a spectacle and rare treat to see these machines performing on a motocross track, rather than participating in the toughest race in the world, the gruelling ‘Dakar’.

Marge Clarke, Secretary of the Sidcup DMCC said “Although Josh Coppins was injured at this weekends Grand Prix and will not be riding at Canada Heights, CAS Honda have drafted in fellow New Zealander and friend of ‘The Lizzard’, Scott Columb to the MX 1 Class. In addition to this we have accepted an entry from KTM’s George Strik, currently second in the Dutch MX 2 Championship. This on top of the Maxxis British Motocross Championship total of approximately 20 regular Grand Prix riders and we can guarantee a fantastic meeting.”

Follow the AA’s ‘British Motocross Championship’ signs from Junction 3 M25/M20 Interchange, further details can also be found on the club’s website www.sidcupmotorcycleclub.co.uk

Swan'ning around at Canada Heights

UNFORTUNATELY this article was written before the first GP of 2006 at Zolder last weekend (I am off swanning myself in deepest Lancashire, on holiday – Graham), so I can't mention how anyone got on, if / when they did exceptionally well, so apologies to the British lads. However, it's round two of the Maxxis British MX Champs this Sunday (April 9) at the spectacular Canada Heights circuit at Swanley, in Kent, and they'll be plenty to mention about them next week.Canada Heights is organising club, Sidcup MCC's circuit which, at its annual British championship event, brings in more spectators than many of the current British champs rounds put together – it is that popular. So the atmosphere is always electric, even if it's persisting it down with rain. And this year, we have arguably the best season of British motocross action to look forward to, after round one at Lyng last month, both the MX1 and MX2 championships will offer plenty of red-hot action all down the field. Reigning British MX1 champion Josh Coppins has a fight on his hands if he intends to retain the domestic crown – not just from many of the opposing team's riders, but from WITHIN his own squad at CAS Honda where big Ken de Dycker will have something to say about the eventual resting place of the title if his performance at Lyng was anything to go by. Both shared a race win and second spot to sit joint leaders of the series at present.James Noble again showed his commitment to racing hard for such an amiable young man. Third and fourth placings at Lyng sees him in third place so far.New recruit to the MX1 ranks is Scotsman Stephen Sword who was recovering from an injured thumb at Lyng, so his form was a bit down on expectations – but don't count him out now he's fit.

Here’s mud in your eye — motocross comes to town

HAVING witnessed motocross first-hand, I can verify it is a noisy, dirty and thrilling experience.

From the moment the first bike catapults itself metres above the spectators' heads to when the last bike crosses the finish line, each race is an exciting pile-up of crashes, jumps and daredevil riding and all just inches from your face. On April 9 the second round of the British Maxxis Motocross Championship comes to Canada Heights, Swanley. Supported by News Shopper and organised by the Sidcup Motorcycle Club, it promises to be a good day out for all the family. After the first round of the MX1 class, Josh Coppins, second in the world last year, is tied on points with his Cas Honda team-mate Ken de Dycker from Belgium. However, there are 38 other top riders all capable of winning. In fact it is the most hotly-contested series in years with more than a quarter of the field having ridden at world level. Keep an eye out for Eltham's Ben Lambert-Williams from SMX racing, Swanley's Mark Eastwood riding with Wiseco UK and David Williams from Beckenham riding a Honda 450 bike. The MX2 class is just as competitive as Marc DeReuver from KYM UK leads the series after round one. He will have his work cut out fending off Scotland's Billy MacKenzie and 16-year-old Tommy Searle from Tonbridge. Everything you need for a great day out is provided by the Sidcup club including free parking, refreshments, trade stands and free paddock walkabouts where you can meet the riders and get autographs. There will also be a chance to meet the British Paris-Dakar rider Charley Boorman, who travelled around the world with Ewan McGregor in The Long Way Round television series. Canada Heights is off junction three of the M25 from where it will be well signposted. If you cut out the advert published in News Shopper, you can exchange it for a free programme.
