Background Information
Early Birds is the name to the season opener that has been held at Canada Heights for a very long time. Since around 1990 it has been the opening round of the British Motocross Championship (the top national series) with just 3 gaps, which includes 2001 due to Foot and Mouth.
There are two classes; "MX2" which is 125cc two strokes and 250cc fourstrokes (in the past the "125" class) and "MX1" which is 250cc two strokes and 450cc fourstrokes (in the past the "MXOpen", "Open", "250" and "500" class).
The event is organised slightly differently to the "normal" MX meetings at Canada Heights. At the start of the day 60 competitors in each class compete in a qualifying session (the bikes are timed by transponders, as pictured above), with the best 40 going through to the afternoon's races, and the other 20 going to the non qualifying races.
