June Enduro 2002

Sunday 2nd June 2002

Riders on enduro, moto-cross and trail bikes ride a 3.5-mile lap using the moto-cross track plus surrounding woods. It's an ever-quickening time schedule over 4 hours non-stop (except for refuelling). Speed helps, but its stamina and endurance that counts in enduros. Free admission - just watch where you walk as the track uses nearly every bit of the land.

Report 1

By the Jamie Clarke (webmaster)

Yet another successful Sidcup event was run at Canada Heights last weekend, when the Sidcup club ran its annual, regional restricted June Enduro. The course consisted of the motocross track, neighbouring woods, and car park fields.

The track was considerably longer this year thanks to extensive preplanning by clerk of the course John Coveney and Roger Brown. It utilised the new spectator tunnel, which meant the motocross track could be split in half, in effect going round twice. This combined with even greater use of the woodland made a course of 4.6 miles (not bad for the crowded Southeast). This meant for the top experts 73.6 miles had to be ridden.

129 competitors battled through the warm summer heat over 4 sessions that took over 4 hours. The sportsmen were once again allowed a half hour break in the third session to allow them to recover from the zombie like trance they were in. The generous time schedule and general good riding led to no major injuries and the St Johns had a relaxing day in the sun.

Neil Challice won the enduro expert class after some great long distance riding, as shown by achieving the best special test time twice. The real success story of the day was in the Enduro Clubmen B. Alastair Brown on the Motorite KTM, won the class despite being just 16 and this being his first season of enduros. An excellent start for the young multitalented sportsman, who rides motocross and trials as well as enduros.

The club must thank everyone who turned up to all the pre and post event working parties, without these people's help the event would not have been possible. The club also feels that the riders who managed this gruelling sun soaked enduro also deserve congratulating. Special thanks must go to technical guru Peter Burrell who through some strange witchcraft managed to determine these results

Report 2

By Bob Dyer - competitor no 124 - via his website.

Had an excellent day at this Enduro. Found the track to be just the right mixture of tight, tough, sections and quick bits where others (not me) could overtake. If someone was trapped behind me it wasn't too long before they had space to overtake without having to shove me out of the way.

The track started with some fiddly woods bits including going up and down cliff faces. I did have to 'cheat' a little on a couple of the upward cliff faces, I'd attack them, launch at the top then the course made you do a sharp right hand turn to go down again. On a couple of occasions I'd launched to the point where there was no way I'd make the tight turn so an extended turn across the already flattened tape and through the spectators (very slowly of course) meant I didn't have to get off and do a three pointer.

After this was a fast bit across a flat (to start with) field where we all had fun opening the throttle and playing with the gearbox. Followed by another tight wooded bit and then we were back at the pits, not to end the track though, you just passed by them and could openly see the burger bar tempting you to just call in for a quick coffee. Those of us the resisted the urge for a mid lap snack were then confronted with an exhaust bending lump/root immediately followed by a narrow gap between trees. Interestingly later in the day the bark seemed to vanish from these trees at foot rest height, I guess it just got frightened and ran away?

Another bit in trees but fairly straight led you once again onto an open bit of land where others could pass, then back into the trees again. All fairly straight but narrow enough to slow you down or test your bark busters, knee pads, body armour etc. then it was onto the MX track at about the half way point.

At the start of the Day I'd walked part of the MX track and got very scared. The ground appeared rock had and full of ruts, the 'jumps' made Evel Kinevel Caesars Palace jump look easy and the divided carriageway looked like it was there just to spear/slice unsuspecting riders who lost control! However, when I got to the track the other bikes had loosened the ground and the jumps didn't look so bad when you could only see the face you were going up. When you got to the downward side it was too late to worry about them :o). By My last lap I'd learnt a lot about these jumps, how to blip the power at the crest whether going up or down. One did keep catching me out though. Each time I'd take of just fine but the landing zone was dead flat and lower than the crest so I'd land both wheels together suspension trying to (if not actually) bottom out and I'd leave a gonad shaped dent in my rockhard saddle. From here it was a fairly straightforward run back to camp and tick off one more lap.

I chose to run an enduro rear tyre at around 7psi. This was an excellent choice I think. Some of the others with trials tyres and 10+ psi seemed to have great problems with some of the hills and the sandy conditions. I suffered in the faster sections and I'm sure that if I'd jumped too high/hard I might have lost a rim but for my abilities the traction on the lose stuff made for a very nice day.

I gained just 5 minutes throughout the day which, although isn't be good enough to get me an award, was good for me.

Report 3

From Steve Hartland, posted on the MX Trax meassage board.

Did your event on Sunday, only my third event, second enduro, obviously in the sportsman class. Finished first section with a couple of minutes to spare, (mainly due to struggling with the trials section at the start of the lap, being blocked and not enough commitment / and being shit at tight hill climbs). Second section came in 10 Minutes early, starting to learn how to take on the tricky sections. Third section finished the 4 laps 9 minutes over, but was a vast improvement in lap time than at the start, had learnt a lot by then, even though absolutly nackered as well. Course was also alot quieter by then, loads of people must of retired, by was deterimined to finish, even if it was last. Really enjoyed the event, long enough lap of very varied terrain, plenty of passing places, so that I could get out of the way!!!, some places for a real good blast. I just wish I could find the speed in the tight sections in the trees, you fast guys make it look so easy, but it isn't for us newbies.

Riders will get a copy in the post, the secretary will be able to produce full results on request - email or contact him (see Peter Burrell on the list).

Full results are here. They are in PDF format - that means you need Adobe Acrobat to use them. The advantage is that the printed version looks correct rather than a HTML version and it avoids the virus and compatibly issues that are associated with DOCs.
