Sidecar Report - by Chris Helm (see mx247.com)

Yesterday the final round of the 2007 Clubmans championship took place at the Sidcup club’s Canada Heights circuit. The track was in prime condition for racing and had been altered considerably since sidecars last raced on it. The changes have considerably improved spectator access and although the track is now a bit tight in places the racing wasn’t adversely affected.

The Clubman’s races were supplemented by 5 riders from the top 15 who were able to take part in the races but could not score points. By starting the two groups separately possible conflicts between them were avoided.

The first race was led by Hyde / J.Chamberlain from Guilford / Batten and series leader Jarvis / Wernham in 3rd. Hyde pulled away from the following group and wasn’t troubled for the rest of the race. Guilford led the fight for second from Jarvis but after two laps Jarvis was passed by Hodges and his stand in passenger Colin Dunkley. This was how they remained for the rest of the race.

Having started the day with a lead of 14 points Jarvis’s lead had now been cut to just seven by Hyde and there were still two races to go.

The start of race two saw disaster strike Hyde when he was shunted on the start straight and stalled the engine. By the time he got the Honda motor restarted he was virtually one lap down. The charge up the hill was led by Blackman / Baughan from Murch / Murch with Hodges in 3rd. Within half a lap Murch was in the lead with Hodges second, Blackman third and Guilford fourth. Jarvis was back in 7th. On the second lap Hodges passed Murch while Jarvis passed Batt and Peacock to take fifth. At the end of this lap March pulled out.

This now promoted Guilford to second behind Hodges with Blackman 3rd and Jarvis 4th. Hyde was now up to 16th but still just out of the points. By half distance Jarvis was up to 3rd which is where he stayed to the flag. Hyde pushed as hard as he could for the rest of the race and managed to finish 10th.

As the riders came to the line for the final race of the championship Hyde was 16 points behind and it would need a miracle for him to take the title. This time Hyde made no mistakes at the start and took the holeshot from Guilford with Jarvis back in 5th.

Hyde led for only one lap when the very much more experienced Guilford passed him and on the same lap Jarvis worked his way up to second. After 5 minutes disaster struck Hyde again and he was relegated to 11th place and the title now seemed to be Jarvis’s if he could keep his head.

Jarvis did keep his head and finished second behind Guilford with Hyde finally finishing 7th. Guilford / Batten took the overall win with Jarvis 2nd and Batt 3rd. In the championship Jarvis / Wernham were the worthy winners with Hyde / Harris / Chamberlain 2nd.
