With the start of the 2005 SE Centre Trials Championship underway, it seems appropriate to look back on 2004 season. The 2004 Championship evolved, once again, into another thrilling-packed year as Ashley Newbery riding a Beta 250, beat off a fierce challenge from Gas Gas rider Richard Ely. The year was full of major incidents including dramatic action at the Langmaid trial when only grit determination and pulse-jangling rides see Newbery unstoppable in his quest for the title. Ely was to bounce back and on no fewer than 2 occasions during the season, but Newbery waved Ely the red card and "bye-bye the championships mine". Not to be discredited out of the thick of the action Rowan Puttock, Adam Farley, Gavin Cooper and Stephen Foord all locked horns with positions changing throughout the year in a battle for the final podium position. The question is, will these, or others push Newbery and Ely firmly down the orders board? The Intermediate championship had equal full-on action with know further than 7 different event winners. The class was so well supported I even had a go myself - not to good thou! Andrew Ely took the win, but who's going to take the honours this season and will the new faces at today's event stay at the top? Novice Class was again right on tune with heated rides from all the competitive riders, but only the master himself Frank Puttock stood proud as at the final count for 2004.

The Sidcup 60 trial is the first round of the SE Championship 2005. The trials course was split in two with white and blue route riders having 10 sections completely void from the red route riders. The weather on the day was bright if chilly; crucial if it had rained the early riders would have had a slight advantage over the later ones, and visa-versa in dry conditions. The splitting of the routes prevented that dreaded 'queuing' and apart from the odd long section, well done Sidcup MCC for a great trial.

Building on the success of his 2004 season Ashley Newbery's takes the first round win with a loss of just 12 marks. This initial kick-start once again confirms Newbery is the man to beat and judging by his ride at section 9, viewing of this rider is a must. Rowan Puttock had a change of mind and line on lap two at section 9, which cost him dear when his wheel became trapped against a log costing him a footed 3. Gavin Cooper stayed consistent and consistent always earns a rider an award, so third on the day was a good start to his season. Puttock did show he's made of winning stuff when he achieved the best third lap score of just 3 marks. However, the 2004 champ Newbery was riding on a mission, that being to whoop the ass of every Expert and by the end of lap one Newbery had lost just one mark to section 9. Puttock the second placed finisher was to end his first lap with a total of 12 equalling Newbery's final trial winning score. Newbery will have to wait to see who will rise from the chasing pack to challenge him for the title, and who ever it is, may the best man whoop ass.

The Intermediate class, I noticed some former Experts returning to the sport with Adam Marshall being one of these riding to win on a measy 8 mark loss. Robert Fleet riding a Scorpa 250sy took second and Ryan Chapman rounded off the last podium position. The Novice class win went to the ever young Derek Baker, surprising Derek only lost one mark and will know doubt be odds on to win the 2005 championship, unless Graham Horrex or Stuart Fritter have something to say about this.
